Personal Thoughts on Physical Limits, Complexity, City Planning, and Community

For this week’s literary group, the writing prompt was “Very bad poetry.” I had a lot of fun with writing three bad poems. When it was time for me to share, I was laughing at my own writing, so I asked another person to read it. I continued writing and editing the poems after the group meeting was over. The three poems are titled, “Blue Wings of Freedom,” “Sandwich Magic,” and “The Green Dragon’s Roar.”

Blue Wings of Freedom

*This bad poem features sarcasm in case people don’t get it.

I want to fly.
I would have huge blue wings
And fly over the big hill in front of my house.

Like the laughter of a golden mermaid,
Freed from that evil witch
And got her voice back
And can sing really good
And swimming in the sea with her lobster and dolphin friends,
I want to be free.

I will see the Earth from the sky
And it will be like a blue marble
Or the eye of an angry dinosaur long dead.

‘Cause freedom is all that matters
And you are not a true American if you don’t love God, freedom, airplanes, and cars.

I want to fly, like
A true American,
A real American,
A badass American.

Sandwich Magic

I love sandwiches.
So magical, must come from witches.
Soft bread and chewy deli meats
Make my head bop in fast beats.

My grandfather loved ham.
He would eat it with a slice of Spam.
He died of high blood pressure.
“Spam’s good for you,” He said, being so sure.

I want to die like him,
Eating what he liked until it killed him.

The Green Dragon’s Roar

Like an emerald cut for the noblest queen,
The dragon’s scales glowed.
The eyes were like emeralds,
Cut by the most ancient dwarven jeweler
In service of his goddess.

When enraged, the Green Dragon would breathe fire.
So beautiful yet so deadly,
The color of magma from Mt. Dasharagon,
The highest and holiest mountain in all of
The Realm of Neranvere.

When other dragons threatened his realm,
The Green Dragon still slumbered.
He trusted his champion,
The great wizard, Shanariah.

When the tyrant Red Dragon pierced the wizard’s heart,
The Green Dragon stirred from his slumber.
The Red Dragon’s fire was hot,
But the Green Dragon’s fire was hotter.
The Green Dragon defeated the Golden Dragon, too,
With its diamond claws.

The Green Dragon roared over
The corpse of the Red Dragon,
The corpse of the Golden Dragon.
Some say his roar was so pure,
It formed an aurora in its wake.

The Green Dragon.
Emerald eyes.
Diamond claws.
Aurora roar.
So awesome.
“Shirargh!”
