In one of the literary groups I have been going to, this week’s exercise was to write something about character motivation in 20 minutes. I stopped writing poetry in my 20s, but I decided to give it a shot. There were no rules on formats, so some people wrote prose and some wrote poetry. My character is an autocratic villain. Readers might find my poem terrible, but it was entertaining for me to write.
The group came up with a list of random words that people could optionally use in their writing. The words I incorporated are in bold.
“The Sun Lord”
We all came from the sun.
But we have forgotten.
One giant star.
Now broken atoms.
Earth and water form our bodies.
Sunlight grows our food and fuel.
You have forgotten our unity,
So I will teach you.
We cannot return to the sun,
So I will become its symbol,
Immersing all in my splendor,
Like the sun shining upon all.
For all who refuse my wondrous light,
I will shine upon them
Until they burn and become soil
That will form new bodies.
